Portugal is a self-styled country comprised of generally reserved and understated people. The Portuguese are traditional and conservative. People do not quickly embrace change and innovation. The Catholic Church has a strong influence on people's lives. The family is the basis of Portuguese life. Life is simple, especially in rural areas. The Portuguese go home after work and entertain on weekends only. Whether a potential resident or tourist, it is polite to learn what the basic Portuguese ideals concerning social customs are.
1. Don't expect many people to speak even basic English.
2. Avoid buying sunglasses of doubtable quality in the street, however tempting they may look.
3. Avoid buying cell phones, cameras, gold etc. from a total stranger in the street, a “good” bargain might end up being a piece junk.
4. Do not give red flowers since red is the symbol of the revolution.
5. Do not give 13 flowers. The number is considered unlucky.
6. Do not give lilies or chrysanthemums since they are used at funerals.
7. Do not begin eating until the hostess says "Bom Appetito".
8. Do not rest your elbows on the table, although your hands should be visible at all times.
9. Do not be offended if the people in Portugal speak loudly and quickly. This does not generally indicate anger or any other negative emotion, it's just the way they speak.
10. Do not step back from someone as they talk to you. In Portugal, personal space is considerably less important, and most people will consider you quite rude if you back away. At the very least, they will step forward again.
11. Do not point to someone using your index finger, it is regarded as vulgar.
12. Do not use a lot of body gestures. Do not be overly demonstrative with hand gestures or body language.
