Surviving Malaysia

DontMalaysia is one of the colourful countries of South Asia, which is renowned for its diverse culture and is fast becoming one of the hottest tourist destinations of South Asia. The country boasts of a heterogeneous society with indigenous people of Malaysia as well as citizens of Indian and Chinese origins. The influence of European, Arab, Persian, and also British Empire, make Malaysia a truly multicultural culture that is rich in variety and truly global.  Although Malaysia is generally a laid back and relaxed place, and people of Malaysia are quite friendly, they do reserve their own customs and the visitors should try to observe these practices when they arrive. Malaysia is a predominantly Muslim country, so be very careful of their customs and cultures. Even though Kuala Lumpur is a modern metropolis, the locals can still be quite traditional and won’t appreciate overly rowdy behaviour or public drunkenness. Dress appropriately when visiting a mosque or a Muslim home. Pointing with your feet is considered rude, as is pointing with your forefinger. Be respectful and err on the side of restraint. The following Malaysia don'ts would surely make your trip to Malaysia an enjoyable lifetime experience. When in Rome, do as the Romans do. When in Malaysia, do as the Malaysians do.

1. Don’t indulge in a public display of affection. Public behaviour is very important in Malaysia.

2. Do not enter a temple, mosque or a local’s home with shoes on.

Untitled3. Do not wear hot pants and vests at mainland beaches if you are female. Topless sunbathing is a no-no. Malay women usually go swimming fully dressed and some keep their scarves on.

4. Don’t touch the head of an adult.

5. A woman should never touch or hand a monk something.

6. Don’t point the bottom of your feet at anyone.

7. Never use your right forefinger to point at places, objects or persons.

8. Never use your left hand to eat and greet in Malaysia.

9. Do not pound your fist into the palm of the other hand, which is considered an obscene gesture to some people.

shakinghands10. Don't offer to shake hands unless you know that your acquaintances are fairly Westernized. Even then, let them offer to shake first. Never shake hands with women unless they offer to do so first.

11. Do not be offended if your offer of a handshake is not reciprocated by a Muslim who is of the opposite sex. In Islam, physical contact between the opposite sex is discouraged.

12. Do not be embarrassed for burping. In Malay dining etiquette, burping or belching after a meal is acceptable.

13. Don't bring up the topic of ethnic relations in Malaysia or the political system: They are both sensitive subjects.

14. Do not gift the Malays alcohol or anything made of pigskin.

15. Do not gift the Chinese scissors, knives or cutting utensils.

16. Do not gift the Hindus leather products or alcohol, unless you are sure they drink.

nodrugs17. Never wrap gifts is white and black. These are considered mourning colours.

18. Don't even think about buying or transporting illegal drugs - there's a mandatory death penalty for trafficking (possession of 200 grams of marijuana is considered to be trafficking).
