Different countries have different cultures, practices, and norms. What is considered normal in your own country may be considered taboo in some. Therefore, it is only proper to study common courtesies and customs if you are visiting a different country. This also applies to Indonesia, a country where large percentage of its population are Muslims and are very conservative compared to most western countries and to even to some neighbouring countries in Asia. This nation has 17,508 islands which makes it the largest archipelagic state in the world. There are numerous ethnic, religious and linguistic communities which reside in Indonesia. Indonesia is frequently visited by tourists all over the world for its exotic locations, temples and other popular attractions .So; it is always advisable for the tourists to follow some tips in Indonesia. If you follow these tips then your trip will be much more enjoyable.
1. Don’t honk if you are struck behind the slow pace of processions.
2. Don’t touch heads of male, female and even children, as it is considered offensive in the country.
3. Don’t use your left hand in handing over something to someone or eating.
4. Don’t try to swim outside designated swimming areas on the Indonesian beach as the currents can be strong.
5. Scanty clothing is not advisable in public places in deference to local customs. Shorts are not allowed in mosques and women should have their arms and head covered.
6. Do not call people by crooking your finger. It is considered impolite.
7. Do not enter temples and places of worship with shoes on.
8. Never cross people while they are having a traditional ceremony.
9. Do not step on offerings on the street.
10. Open displays of anger – shouting, hands on hips, rude looks, slamming doors – are all highly offensive behaviour. Foreigners are generally seen as unable to control their anger. Refrain from it.
11. Do not drink tap water.
12. Do not make your holiday in the sun into a holiday in the toilet. Go easy on the food. Beware of Bali Belly.
13. Never leave your important travel documents like passports, tickets or money, in the hotel room, deposit at hotel front desk to be kept in a safe.
